Sir The Baptist – 4 Chi City Radio Featured Artist [Interview x Video]

sir the baptist

Raised in a religious family, with Gospel, Jazz, and Soul influence… Chi City Hip Hop artist Sir The Baptist is here to raise hell until it’s Hip Hop heaven. Not forgetting his roots and paying homage to iconic renaissance artists such as Ella Fitzgeral and Louis Armstrong. Collaborating with Chicago Hip Hop artists such as King Louie, Twista, and Chance the Rapper, Sir is all about the Chicago music scene… and you can catch him at church on a Sunday morning. Being a preacher’s son, Sir takes the power of his rebellion to push for positive change for the people. With his latest track/video “Wake Up” recently featured on Tidal this month, Sir is definitely getting the message heard on a scale… that even Jay Z approves of.

I got a chance to catch with Sir for an interview, check it out below.

B Roc – Name your top five favorite artists?
Sir The Baptist – Jay Z because he was one of my early inspirations, but I really respect him as an artist and businessman more than anyone else. Louis Armstrong because he lived in Bronzeville where I’m from in Chicago and is my biggest jazz inspiration. Andre 3000 because he always brings a catchy/great song with a real message behind it. “Bombs Over Baghdad” is a perfect example of this. Frank Sinatra because of his class, style and truly being one of the original crooners. And finally Ella Fitzgerald because she also lived down the street in my neighborhood in Bronzeville and is one of the most incredible vocalists of all-time.

B Roc – What inspired you to become a Hip Hop artist?
Sir The Baptist – My older brothers are all incredible singers and artists. They were my initial inspiration to start singing and really get involved in music. But my father was a preacher in Bronzeville, so I was always surrounded by music every Sunday and was inspired by watching him preach. Also, living in the same neighborhood as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald in Bronzeville in Chicago played a role in seeing some of the greats around me.

@sirthebaptist

B Roc – Who would you like to collab with?
Sir The Baptist – Jay Z, Beyonce, Aretha franklin, Andre 3000, Shirley Caesar, Quincy Jones, Lelah Hathaway, Cee Lo Green, Kanye West & Stevie Wonder.

B Roc – Tell us about one of your biggest accomplishments as an artist? Or most memorable moment.
Sir The Baptist – My most memorable moment as an artist was just over a week ago when performing at a concert at Schubas in Chicago. I’ve played bigger events before, but something special happened at that concert. The energy in the room and between me and ChuchPeople [the group of musicians on-stage with me] was intense. And when I looked out at the crowd that night, I saw most of the people in the audience literally crying from the emotion and connection to the music.

B Roc – What is something you want people to know about you as an artist?
Sir The Baptist – The biggest thing that is overlooked about me as an artist is the depth in my lyrics. I try to make catchy music that people will like, but it will take a few listens to really understand some of the messages that are in there. That is why I’ve created a podcast called Urban Bible to really decode some of what is there lyrically and understand it on a deeper level. You can check this out at www.urbanbibe.today.

B Roc – What do you hate & what do you love about Chicago?
Sir The Baptist – I hate that Chicago typically doesn’t see the gems in the city, especially in the music scene. many times. And there is such incredible talent and history here that often gets overlooked. A perfect example of this is the lack of understanding by Chicagoans about the Great Migration, when the back communities left the South and ended up in Bronzeville and other neighborhoods on the South Side of Chicago.

But I love that Chicago has this history and that such great talent exists on nearly every corner. I love the city!

[Video] Piss On Your Grave – Travis Scott x Kanye West

Piss on your grave Travis Scott x Kanye West 2015

Travis Scott comes through with visuals for new heat, P*ss On Your Grave. Featuring Chicago’s South Side, Mr. GOOD Music himself Kanye West. POYG is off Scott’s latest album Rodeo. The video was released via Apple Music, and directed by Nabil. Nabil, being Yasiin Bey (Mos Def)… also making a cameo in the video. Visuals of Scott and West walking through a forest… leaving you to wonder if they were just leaving from a cemetery… hmmmm??? The track has the feel of Kanye’s last album Yeezus, released back in 2013. Rodeo carries featured artists 2Chainz, Future, The Weekend, Juicy J, and more. Travis also mentioned that Kanye’s next album is due to release “very soon.”

D2G – 4 Chi City Radio’s Featured Artist

D2G

For Chicago Hip Hop artist, D2G, Hip Hop has been a part of him since the beginning. He has been on the move and making waves within the music scene, and showing no signs of slowing down any time soon. With tracks like “The Quest”, “I Spy”, and “Hydroplanin” from his latest album Short Summers Long Winters, D2G is making his mark in Hip Hop and dropping heat along the way. November 13th, D2G will be sharing the stage with Shady Records very own Joe Budden at The Promontory. I got a chance to catch up with D2G for an interview, check out what he had to say below.

B Roc – Name your top five favorite artists?

D2G – That’s a tough one… only because at any moment, any music artist that inspires me through their art, can become my favorite. But let’s see, in no particular order. Rakim, Michael Jackson, Biggie Smalls (Notorious Big), Nas, and a tie between Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. By far my favorite element to music is story telling, and these are the best artists to do it.

B Roc – What inspired you to become a Hip Hop artist?

D2G – Well, its a crazy story to share and you’ll probably laugh. But my very first words as a baby was “Wild Wild West”. This is referring to the old school tune by Kool Moe Dee. I’ve been engulfed in HIP HOP since birth! So naturally I’d find myself mimicking rap music until I started to create my own art from it.

@2GMAKEAMOVE

B Roc – What is something you want people to know about you as an artist?

D2G – Wow, you’re really digging deep here, lol ok! Something that I feel a lot of people may not know is that I’m an artist. I say that in a sense of how they know that… I rap, write, and do production… but they probably don’t understand what all goes into it. I give 200% with every lyric that I write. It comes from my heart, mind, and soul. I try to give as much of me as I can, so that it comes through, and you feel it in every song.

B Roc – Tell us about one of your biggest accomplishments as an artist? Or most memorable moment.

D2G – It’s a few moments that stand out in my mind actually. Just last summer I was in the top 3 emcees of the Jack’n For Beats contest. I’ve won freestyle competitions hosted by SAM-I-AM THE MC. I even had a chance, through my homies, The Ol’ Days Music, to open for Talib Kweli and Slum Village.  I have also experienced performing down at SXSW a few months back. That was awesome!

B Roc – Who would you like to collab with?

D2G – That’s such an open question… I honestly can’t give you a straight up answer. Of course, you have the Kendrick Lamar’s and J Cole’s of the world. As well as legends like Rakim, KRS One and GFK (Ghostface Killah). But you also have folks like Add-2, Rhapsody,  Y.P., Big K.R.I.T. , Joe Budden and more. But honestly, I’m open to collab with anybody who’s dope! That’s what music is! A collaborative effort amongst people to bring art to life in the form of melodies and rhythm.

@VicSpencer @2GMAKEAMOVE

B Roc – What do you hate & what do you love about Chicago?

D2G – It’s so much on both sides of that spectrum. Honestly, you have to be in Chicago to truly understand it. I have a love/hate relationship with my city. I hate the negative stigmas that surround Chicago. Not just from outsiders, but ones we place upon ourselves. (CHI-RAQ, CITY OF HATE, MURDER CAPITAL, DERRICK ROSE INJURIES, ETC.)

But what I love about Chicago is our authenticity. Everything about Chicago is authentic. From our presence, to our vernacular, our music, our sports. You can tell a Chicago individual when you come across one. We influence the world whether people want to admit it or not.

Sometimes you have to take the good, with the bad. But in an eerie sense… that’s what makes you love our city more.

B Roc – What is something about you, you want people to know?

D2G – I want people to honestly just get to know me through my music. I’m very personable in a way, that I’ll tell you whatever it is I’m feeling or thinking… without you thinking I’m giving too much of me. I want people to know that I’m more than just a rapper or an emcee. I DO MUSIC! I love music! From all it’s means. I just happen to enforce my lyricism more because that’s what drew me into HIP HOP in the first place.

D2G will be rocking the stage with Shady Records recording artist Joe Budden at The Promontory, November 13th. Cop tickets via promontorychicago.com.

The Boy Illinois Speaks On Upcoming “DuSable” EP (+Video)

five-slh-083114.4-1

The Boy Illinois has been firing warning shots all summer long, to get y’all ready for the drop of his latest EP DuSable. With tracks like “Sell Again“, “Piece Of Mind“, and “Back Down“, DuSable is sure to make for quite the introduction, to those who may not know of the Chicago based emcee/ lyricist. The EP holds 11 tracks, with majority of production done by Chicago producer D. Gainz. For featured artists, Illinois has Drey Skonie, Trae The Truth, and Twista come through and hold it down. DuSable is presented by Fake Shore Drive, and slated to drop August 10th. Copped a moment to chop it up with Illi, to share a bit on DuSable. It goes as follows…

B Roc – What do you hope fans get from DuSable?
Boy Illinois – I hope they connect on every aspect, the grooviness, the message…you know? I tried to make it so relatable to the point where it’s like you could spoon feed a child, and they still get all of their nutrients… they should get everything they need from it. I’m excited about it, it’s real cool, simple, and bouncy. D. Gaines worked on a good half of the project with me. Fake Shore Drive presented the project and it should be great I’m feeling very confident about DuSable.

B Roc – Tell us a bit about the featured artists on your latest project.
Boy Illinois – I look at these projects as my resume, and I really like for them to speak for me… show my work! I don’t care to have a lot of features… and when I do, I’m really selective. I have Drey Skonie as a feature on the track “Ruling Class 15”His contributions were written by yours truly… I still wanted my work to come thru. And of course you know, Trae The Truth and Twista for “BlackMale”.

@TheBoyIllinois @DGainzBeats

B Roc – What’s next for events or upcoming shows?
Boy Illinois – I’m headlining We Are Hip Hop Festival coming up, August 1st. DuSable drops August 10th… then off to New York and later LA for press.

@TheBoyIllinois @DGainzBeats

B Roc – Any ventures outside of music?
Boy Illinois – I’m currently the Brand Ambassador of a London menswear clothing line, Dent De Man. They take old African 70’s and 80’s textiles and prints, and turn them into mens suits and menswear. They looked out for me for wardrobe for one of my videos I did, and I really dig their work. Their brand really fits in to who I am, and they see where we are going with our vision. I also have a sponsorship with an alkaline water company in the works. I’m a healthy person… I have my vices that I partake in here and there, but overall I believe in promoting a healthy lifestyle.

MoBo The Great – F#ck The Public EP and Interview

Chicago female MC MoBo The Great is known for being up on stage, with Mr. Carter himself, Jay Z, spittin bars not once… but twice, in her hometown! Not a lot of artists have the muscle to flex such bragging rights, but MoBo does! And now with the release of her latest EP “F#ck The Public“, she’s flipping the bird and droppin that fye at the same damn time!! FTP has features from Katie Got Bandz,  BJ The Chicago Kid, and more. Production OB Webbie, The Gift, Martin $ky, and more. MoBo The Great is a lyrical MC, with a unique style that’s definitely needed in Hip Hop right now. This album makes me look forward to more of what she has in store. But for now, flip them birds to da haterz, and F#ck wit F#ck The Public!!!

http://soundcloud.com/mobothegreat/sets/fuck-the-public

What made you choose to title your EP F#ck The Public?

I was trying to get the attention of blogs, and I felt like in Chicago, it’s less about your talent… and more about your cosign. So at that point, it was a f#ck you to everybody! But the more I worked on my project, it became something different, more introspective. In society, if you’re a girl, you’re expected to rap like Nicki Minaj and dress like Lil Kim… and I do neither!! So it’s just breaking down all of what society says, f#ck the public… just be you!

Now that FTP is released, how does it feel?

“F#ck The Public” is my first project. It took a while, cause I’m a perfectionist. It’s kinda hard and scary, putting out your music… not knowing how things will go. It’s something you spend so much time and money on, and you work so hard, and it could possibly flop. You can’t really book shows without having a body of work. Add that fact, and a push from my team… it put me in the position to where I just had to let it go. I’m happy and sad now that it’s finished… it’s out!! So now it’s on to the next. I plan on putting out 2 more projects before the year is out.

Any ventures outside of music?

My life is music! I have different ventures within music. I was a writer before anything. I want to write for other artists. I have a song I wrote that I want to hand over to Tink, because she can sing. I probably want to continue rapping for about 5 -10 years… establish my brand. Later, get in to TV, become an actor… I want an endorsement with Adidas. I want to grow in to a well known brand, become a household name.

What are your feelings on the state of Hip Hop right now?

The state of Hip Hop is getting better. It’s all about what you choose to look for. A lot of focus is on rappers like Chief Keef, Lil Durk, and King Louie cause that’s the image they wish to paint. In the Chicago scene you also have rappers like Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Martin Sky, and Kembe. I think that music is wherever you find it. I feel pretty good about the state of Hip Hop. More artists are starting to get their shine, and Chicago is like the renaissance again right now!!

What do you hope the people get from FTP?

I want people to know this is talent, 100% percent. I want people to appreciate, that this is a solid cohesive album. I’m not afraid to work with other artists. And that I really care about the music and the culture.

Donny Konz – 4 Chi City Radio Recap

Recently on 4 CHI CITY RADIO, Donny konz came through with new music and latest on updates. Here’s a recap of his interview.

donny konz

Name your top five favorite artists?

 Kid Cudi, Eminem, J. Cole, Drake, King Louie

Kid Cudi, I like his soul and his vibes, I feel him the most. He’s like me on the inside I think.. I love his flows, wordplay, and how he helped change the game in Hip Hop.

King Louie, I feel like the wordplay and scheme on how he writes gets me. Its more of the delivery he has… its not common. It’s sorta everywhere. And as a Chicago artist, if you can be hard and different I feel that!  I’m from a hard place, plus he’s OVO with the main homie Drake.

Drake, well Drake, he does everything right!! From rapping to singing, he can create new sounds and melodies. That’s why he is always a step ahead of the game. I want to pick his brain one day, because it’s not so much about making hits… its about making the song that will be hot with a new sound. But I have no favorite or order, I listen to a lot of different artists.

 What inspired you to become a hip hop artist/songwriter?

I just always had a gift for music and words, so I just went with it. It started in grammar school, and it went from there. I was planning on being a reporter or something like that.

Tell us about one of your biggest accomplishments as an artist? Or most memorable moment.

I opened for Hoodie Allen,  and like 2,000 people were at the rave. But really… everything I do is big in my eyes, every step leads to more success and making hits.

What’s something about you, that people may not know?

Ummm, I’m a nice guy… but my soul is fire. So undeneath it all, don’t mess with me! Ha! Which is why my music is so filled with anger. I feel over looked at times, but if I wasnt, I wouldn’t be as good as I am. And i love anime, big Naruto and DBZ fan.

 What do you hate & what do you love about Chicago?

I don’t hate anything about Chicago, but I don’t love everything about it. A lot of things that happen in this city make me who and what I am.

What is something you want people to know about you as an artist?

As a artist, I have a great flow… but I love just vibing with the music. Sometimes less words are more words in my eyes. I freestyle for hours in the mirror sometimes when im feeling myself, or act like I was battling another rapper. Ha!
